ANCIENT FENG SHUI

Long before there were weather reports, realtors and architects, wind and water were seen as omens and sacred signs directing shamans as to the most auspicious location for a grave, alter or home.

The term Feng Shui means "wind" (Feng) and "water" (Shui)  and is the name the Chinese  gave to a very practical and intuitive art which seeks to bring people and their environment into balance and harmony creating the most positive relationship possible.  This balanced and harmonious relationship allows one to  direct the flow of nature's positive energy or Chi to bring opportunities, blessings, peace, joy, health, wealth, happiness, success and positive relationships into our lives.

The winds are mild,
The sun is bright,
The water is clear,
The trees are lush.

This ancient Chinese Poem describes ideal living conditions, in harmony with Heaven and Earth.  It describes very good Feng Shui.  It is said that the term Feng Shui came from this poem.

FORM SCHOOL

In the beginning, born out of an agrarian society, was the Form School of Feng Shui.  This school, like it's name looks at the form or shapes of land, mountains, etc., to determine the positive or negative influences on man and environment.  Form School also took weather and climate into account.  Form school reads the lay of the land and the climate to determine the best locations for living and working.  In ancient China it was auspicious to have the mountain at your back, on the North side of a river with your house facing south.  The mountain protected you from invaders (psychologically as well as physically) and harsh weather conditions, the river provided water for crops, the sun to the South aided the growth of crops and provided warmth and light.  Form School is still studied today and some of it's also incorporated into other schools of Feng Shui.

A Feng Shui Practitioner was summoned to help locate the perfect site for land, home, alter and grave site.  When this perfect location was not possible an antidote was necessary.  This antidote is known as a Feng Shui "cure."

COMPASS SCHOOL

Compass school studies and stresses direction (north, south, east and west) and it's relationship to the person .  Compass school compares the direction of your front door to your personal life directions.  Personal life directions are calculated from the time and date of your birth, there are methods that are quite simple and there are very complex methods used for this purpose.

In the very early days, of Compass School, practitioners paid little attention to the tenets of Form School.  Later, in the late ninteenth/early twentieth century, practitioners realized that they could not totally ignore form and the two schools merged.  Today when one says they practice Compass School they are also using teachings from the older Form School sometimes with more emphasis on one school or the other.
